A SOFT, REGULAR beeping sound. The low murmur of voices. Ambra’s eyes flickered and opened. Everything white, a sterile smell.

Blurred shapes began to coalesce into forms. Her mother. Her father.

‘Ambra!’ she heard her mother exclaim.

Her mother’s hand on her cheek. Ambra’s eyes focused.

‘Mum?’

Her father squeezed her hand.

‘Dad? Where’s Jevon?’ mumbled Ambra through swollen lips.

‘He’s here at the hospital. He was only transferred here this morning, and he has been sedated. Once he comes out of that, he has to have a check-up, and then he’ll be able to come and see you,’ said Robert Lightstone.

‘How did he … he was stuck in a game … on the bottom of the sea …’
